1. SUGAR

Sugar acts as the primary food of your flower. This will surely help them last longer and it works better if mixed with vinegar or lemon juice. Just dissolve 3 tablespoons of sugar and add 2 tablespoons of vinegar per liter of lukewarm water. Pour the solution in a vase and make sure that it reached the stems up to 3-4 inches.

2. ASPIRIN

Add aspirin to your water. This aids in turning the water more acidic which will surely limit the growth of bacteria that shortens the lifespan of your flowers.

3. VINEGAR

Cut flowers are said to take up more water if the water is slightly acidic so many people are used to adding vinegar with a mixture of sugar to make the cut flowers last longer.

4. PENNY

Add a penny to the bottom of your flower vase. Plants need 17 major elements for normal growth like carbon, hydrogen and oxygen which can be found in our air and water. Aside from that they also need 8 other elements which are called micronutrients. Examples of these are iron, zinc and copper. Micronutrients are usually dissolve in water and absorbed by the roots. As an alternative for our cut flowers you can actually put a penny in the water and it might just give sufficient copper ions to extend the life of your flowers. Aside from that, a penny also acts as a fungicide.

5. BLEACH

Bleach prevents bacterial growth. To make your cut flowers last longer just add ¼ teaspoon of bleach per 1 liter of water. To help avoid having cloudy water you can also mix 3 drops of bleach and 1 teaspoon of sugar in a liter of water. These floral food recipes also work well in preventing molds from growing which will cause your flowers to die prematurely.

6. HAIR SPRAY

Aside from preserving your hairstyles, hair sprays are also good in preserving your beautiful flowers. Give a quick spray on the undersides of the leaves and petals.

7. SODA

Soda contains sugar that is a good source of floral food. The sugar provides nutrients for continual bloom development. Just add a cup of clear soda per half  gallon of water.

8. VODKA

Vodka is also a good floral preservative. It interfere the plants ripening process. The alcohol of Vodka acts to inhibit the ethylene production of your flowers. Ethylene is a ripening gas emitted by plants that helps them mature and if inhibited could slow the wilting process of your flower.

1. After buying flowers from the flower shop, gently remove the packaging making sure not to break any part of the flowers.

2. Prepare a clean vase or container. Make sure that it is really clean to avoid bacteria from ruining the quality of your flowers.

3. For roses particularly, it is best to remove the guard petals. These are the first 3 outer layers of petals that surround and support the delicate inner petals of the rose.

4. Make sure to remove the leaves below the water line. Leaves that submerge on the water will rot easily causing the formation of bacteria that will shorten the life span of your flowers.

5. Cut the stems using a sharp knife. Cut it diagonally to have more stem surface area. This helps increase the water uptake. For roses, it is also recommended to crush and split the bottom of their woody stems to help take up more water. Re cut the stems after 2-3 days for long lasting displays. It is best to cut the stems underwater to prevent air from getting into the stem tissues causing the cells to plug up.

6. Put flower foods in the water like sugar or crushed aspirin to add life to your flowers.

7. Change the water every 2 days to avoid building up bacteria in the water.

8. Keep cut flowers away from fruits because they release a gas that causes your flowers to age faster.

9. Keep them in cool places. Avoid exposing them from direct sunlight and place them far from appliances like computers, televisions, refrigerators and the like. These will cause excess water loss from your flowers, and they will wilt very quickly.

Rafflesia arnoldii

Rafflesia arnoldii is the largest flower producing individual in the world and has a strong odor of decaying flesh thus some call this as “corpse flower”. This is found in the rainforest of Indonesia particularly in Sumatra and Borneo. This rare flower can grow 3 feet across and weigh up to 7 kilograms. It is known to be parasitic since it attaches to a host plant just to obtain water and nutrients. The unpleasant odor emitted by the pant is used mainly to attract insects that pollinate the plant.

Carnation is known as “flower of love” or “flower of the gods”.  This flower has been known for centuries and is one of the world’s oldest cultivated flowers. In 20th century, carnation is known as the Mother’s Day flower. Carnation as a flower means fascination, distinction and love. Light red carnation conveys admiration whereas dark red carnation is often used by lovers to show deeper feelings of love and affection. In addition, white carnation symbolizes purity and luck, and pink carnation for gratitude.

APRIL – Daisy

Aster has been considered as an enchanted flower. This flower is known as a talisman of love and a symbol of patience. Ancient people believed that when the leaves of this flower are burned could drive away evil serpents. Aster is also known as the 20th wedding anniversary flower.

OCTOBER – Calendula  or Marigold (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula came from the Latin word kalendae which means ‘first day of the month’ maybe because pot marigolds are in bloom at the start of most months of the year. Marigold is one of the most versatile flowers to grow in a garden, because it is very easy to grow. Calendula is also called as “summer bride” or “husbandman’s dial” because it’s flower head follows the sun.

NOVEMBER – Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum is known for its original golden brown color. The Greek prefix “chrys-“ means golden (its original color) and “-anthemion,” means flower, years of artful cultivation have produced a full range of colors, from white to purple to red. This flower symbolizes optimism and joy. Chrysanthemum is also known as the 13th wedding anniversary flower.

DECEMBER – Narcissus (Narcissus pseudonarcissus L.)

Narcissus flower name was derived from Greek mythology of Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection in a stream. This wonderful flower represents formality, sweetness, self admiration, formality, and egotism.
